MSBOA ALTERNATIVE STYLES STRINGS DAY (GRADES 9-12)

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2010
MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY - SCHOOL OF MUSIC

The MSBOA Alternative Styles Strings Day (ASD) is a one-day event that provides participants with the opportunity to work with state-renowned clinicians: String Cheese (Ali Haraburda and Diana Ladio) and Reid Smith. String players in the 9th - 12th grades at MSBOA member high schools during the 2010-2011 school year, as well as MSBOA members, may participate in this event. The ASD gives both students and teachers the opportunity to explore a wide range of musical styles on their string instruments, including fiddle, rock, and jazz. This event will culminate in a performance at Michigan State University. Pre-established alternative styles student groups in the state will also have the opportunity to audition to be featured in the evening's concert.

SCHEDULE:

Time Student Type Event

8:00 AM All Students - Arrive for Registration

8:30 AM All Students - Mass Rehearsal (Introduction to tunes and the day)

9:30 AM Individual Track - Breakout Sessions(Small groups by instrument or ability)
Group Track - Group Workshops (Rotate directors)

10:30 AM Individual Track - Full Rehearsal with String Cheese
Group Track - Full Rehearsal with Reid Smith

11:30 AM All Students - Lunch (Subway)

12:15 PM Individual Track - Breakout Sessions
Group Track - Group Workshops (Rotate directors)

1:15 PM Individual Track - Full Rehearsal with Reid Smith
Group Track - Full Rehearsal with String Cheese

2:15 PM Individual Track - Full Rehearsal with String Cheese
Group Track - Sound Check for Featured Groups and/or Group
Workshops with Reid Smith

3:15 PM All Students - Combined Rehearsal with String Cheese, including
Q&A time with the artists

4:15 PM All Students - Dinner (Domino's Pizza)

5:00 PM All Students - Sound Check for Concert

6:00 PM All Students - Concert:
Starts with Individual Track, followed by each Alt-Styles Group who auditioned to be featured (10-15 group maximum or 1-3 tunes/sets, depending on number of groups), followed by 10 minute intermission prior to String Cheese's 30-45 minute set. Concert ends with ALL ASD students (both individual and group) performing combined number(s) with String Cheese

7:30 PM All Students - ASD Ends

8:00 PM All Students - (optional) MSU Symphony Orchestra Concert

INSTRUMENTS: Students are responsible for their own instruments.

PARTICIPATION ELIGIBILITY: Student participants of the ASD must be members of their high school orchestra program; their school must be a member of MSBOA. No alt-styles experience is required!

ASD will have two tracks for student participants: an Individual Track and a Pre-Established Alternative-Styles Group Track. Students registering as individuals must play violin, viola, cello, or bass. Pre-established alt-styles performance groups must be from one MSBOA school district, all be high-school students, and must have been in existence for at least one (1) year prior to the 2010-2011 school year. If the alt-styles group's teacher is not an MSBOA member (but all of the students attend the same school district), that district's orchestra teacher may be the sponsor of this ensemble. Regular members of the alt-styles performance group who do not play orchestral string instruments (i.e., piano, drums, guitar, banjo, mandolin, etc.) may participate in the ASD Group Track. These auxiliary instrumentalists must fit the same criteria as the string players in the group.

Pre-established alt-styles groups wishing to perform a featured number on the ASD Concert must be full participants in the entire MSBOA ASD Event. Such groups must submit a recording of the up to three pieces that they wish to perform with their applications, and this recording may not exceed fifteen (15) minutes. There is not a guarantee that each group will be able to perform all three selections on the concert; the time able to be allotted to each performance group will be determined based on the number of groups wishing to be featured. Members of the MSBOA ASD Committee who are not bringing groups to the event will serve as the "selection committee" to determine the number of selections performed by each group and to fit that into the concert time frame. Such groups will need to work within the constraints of the generic sound system being used for the entire concert. This system will be supplied and run by experienced technicians and will include approximately 10 microphones, as well as adequate monitors and speakers.

MUSIC: Upon receiving the school's applications, directors will be sent some of the music for the students in advance. Students must bring their own copies of the music, as well as learn it in advance of the clinic. The clinics will not be as effective if students are struggling to play the notes.

ENTRY FEE: The entry fee is $35 per student and $15 per director/parent chaperone. These fees include lunch and dinner, as well as admission to the evening's concert. Extra concert tickets may be purchased for families and friends at the rate of $5 per ticket. Please include one check, made payable to "MSBOA," per school for the correct total amount for all students from that school.

MEALS: Both lunch and dinner will be provided for all paid participants. Lunch will be from Subway, and dinner will be from Domino's Pizza. Assorted desserts and snack foods will be provided with those as well. Please indicate how many vegetarians will be coming from your school, as well as if there are any special dietary concerns, including food allergies.

DEADLINE:
The postmark deadline for the applications is Friday, October 1, 2010. String teachers are urged to support this project to promote string instrument performance. It is vital that directors take advantage of offerings like this to help ensure continued health of all string programs state-wide. Late entries will be subject to a $5.00 per participant late fee and will only be accepted for one week beyond the deadline - a postmark of Friday, October 8, 2010. Following the entry deadline, no refunds will be given for any reason.

Send the Registration and Participant Information Forms and your check (certified mail is recommended), using this form as your invoice, by Friday, October 1, 2010 to:

Amy Marr, Tecumseh Middle School, 307 N.
